This is not a skin disease. We did not invent this name. Whats in a name, anyway? One supposes that a Scrophularia by any other name would smell as sweet. We also suppose that it likes water judging by its specific epithet, aquatica. Weve been growing it high and dry with no problem although it does appreciate an occasional drink in hot, dry weather. The foliage is eye-riveting; creamy-white on somewhat rugose, oval leaves. It flowers like a Veronica, blue flowers on 10-12 spikes all summer. Itll be happiest along the edge of a pond, a brook or maybe in a wetter part of your garden.
Sun Exposure: Full sun to part shade
Cold Hardiness: Zones 5-9
Spacing: 15-18"
Growth Rate: Vigorous
Water Needs: Moist, well-drained soil and ample water |

Think about foliage color in your garden. Perennials dont all flower all season. Bertram Anderson has 12 stems of a glossy purple hue which are cloaked with cool, dusty-lilac leaves, the overall effect being one of very subdued blue. In bold contrast with its understated foliage are its hot, rose-pink flowers in late summer. It would look great in a rockery or as a front of border skirt to delineate precisely where the lawn ends and the garden begins. It requires good drainage for optimal performance and presents most elegantly when mulched with pea gravel or marble chips.
Sun Exposure: Full sun
Cold Hardiness: Zone 4-9
Spacing: 12-15"
Growth Rate: Moderate
Water Needs: Very drought resistant; resents frequent irrigation |

Violets are supposed to be sweet but seldom are. Dancing Geisha is a fragrant exception. According to our source, the incomparable Dan Heims, the foliage of this violet is Fantastically silvered and swirled and cut ---takes highest honors in the foliage arena. Delicate blue flowers are produced in mid spring, but the leaves alone are simply splendid. A show-stopper in small containers. Delicious fragrance. And who are we to question this source? If you like violets, youll definitely love this one.
Sun Exposure: Partial sun or high shade
Cold Hardiness: Zones 5-9
