Achillea millefolium 'Red Velvet' – Red Velvet Yarrow
Yarrows are just about the easiest plants to grow. They are deer resistant, tolerant of a wide range of soils, and actually seem to prefer sandy infertile soil. They are drought tolerant, and given sunny location will bloom for 6 weeks or more. Achillea 'Red Velvet' grows 30” tall and is an outstanding cultivar from the Netherlands with dark rosy red flowers that do not fade. Regarded as one of the best reds to date, it is sure to please.

Astrantia major 'Hadspen Blood' – Hadspen Blood Masterwort
From Nori Pope at Hadspen House near Castle Cary in England, this is said to be the darkest red Astrantia available. Like all Astrantias, it makes an excellent cut flower with a long life in the vase. It has true flowers that are pink, surrounded by a collar of red bracts which produces a star-like effect in early to mid-summer. Flowering profusely it also has excellent rebloom. The foliage is tinged purple and denser than most Astrantias. It grows to 24” tall.

Athyrium x 'Branford Rambler – Branford Rambler Fern
A cross between Athyrium filix-femina (Lady Fern) and Athyrium niponicum pictum, (Japanese Painted Fern), this fern has some of the variegation of the Japanese Painted Fern, with the taller stature and drought resistant nature of the Lady Fern. As the name implies it will spread and form a nice groundcover, but is not invasive as some ferns. It grows about 2’ tall and will spread about 3’ wide. Hybridized by legendary plantsman, Nick Nicou, of Branford, CT.

Athyrium x 'Ghost' – Ghost Fern
From the garden of Virginia’s Nancy Swell, this new fern is a cross between Athyrium filix-femina (Lady Fern) and Athyrium niponicum pictum (Japanese Painted Fern). This is a clump forming rigidly upright fern to 2-3’ tall with the ghostly silver-gray foliage of the Japanese Painted Fern. To make a haunting impression use this fern in the shade garden wherever you wish, even in rather dry conditions. It is great combined with blue foliage Hostas or Epimediums.

Baptisia x 'Purple Smoke' – Purple Smoke Wild Indigo
Rob Gardner, propagation curator at NC Botanical Gardens in Chapel Hill, NC Hill, discovered this exciting selection. It has the charcoal stems and gray-green foliage of White Wild Indigo (Baptisia alba) with flowers that are a smoky violet with a purple eye. The plant itself forms an eye-catching vase shape, which will lend architectural structure to your garden. Numerous flowers open first at the base of the flower stalk and ascend upwards, topping out at 4’. Mature plants can bear over 50 blooming stalks in the spring. Easy to grow and long lived in any sunny location in lean, well-drained soil. A great drought tolerant native plant!
