| Teucrium majoricum 'Purple Robe' Purple Robe Germander |
From the high mountains of Majorca, this Mediterranean plant will not be hardy in all locations. We supposed it to be a zone 7 or better plant but have brought it through two zone 6 winters here. Give it a try. It forms a lovely silver mat of marvelously fine foliage and bears short, fat spikes of deep purple flowers in late spring to early summer. In 2000 it rebloomed for us in September and Oct. Plant it in full sun and well-drained soil.
Sun Exposure: Full to Partial Shade
Cold Hardiness: Zones 7-9
Spacing: 12"
Growth Rate: Moderate
Water Needs: Must have well-drained soil

From Dan Hinkley of Heronswood Nursery in Washington comes this unusual Foamflower. Each fuzzy leaf is heavily dusted with a cream frosting, making this Tiarella really brighten up dark shady spots in the garden. The foliage takes on pink overtones when the weather is cool. White bottlebrush looking flowers in spring. Looks great when combined with purple leaf Heucheras such as Heuchera Midnight Claret.

A lovely export from England, this is a variegated low growing groundcover with creamy edges and short, intense blue spikes in spring. Im down on Kentucky bluegrass. Its time to start establishing a no maintenance lawn. No chemicals; no cantankerous lawn mowers and accompanying fumes. Just flowering plants! Veronica, pearlwort (Sagina subulata), creeping thyme, bugleweed, etc. Corinne Tremaine, whoever you are, youre in my lawn and in my heart forever!

Veronica x 'Royal Candles' (PPAF) Royal Candles Veronica |

We thought of calling this Veronica Sunny Border Blue Junior but the rules of taxonomy dont allow for such long names. Besides, the English hybridizer might have taken some umbrage to our usurpation of his hybrid (although one of its parents is Veronica Sunny Border Blue, our famous introduction). We like its shorter growing habit and long bloom period. Grows 15-18 tall and likes well-drained soil in sun. You ought to chuck a little lime on it every spring.

Vinca minor 'Illumination' (PPAF) Illumination Periwinkle |

This Vinca has leaves with bright gold interiors and dark green edges. Violet-blue flowers in spring on a spreading evergreen groundcover just 4-6 tall. Are you tired of amorphous green groundcovers like Pachysandra with little flower appeal? Its time to illuminate your shade garden! The foliage of Illumination is so bright, youll think youre looking at the mid-day sun. Sorry, sunglasses are not included.

The flowers are so large on this gem that you might mistake it for a pansy except for the finely dissected leave which show it to be a birds foot violet, one of our most charming eastern woodland natives. Introduced by Don Jacobs, venerable plantsman from Decatur Georgia, who always prefixes his moniker, Eco, before his hybrids and discoveries. Eco Big has large blue and white flowers in early spring. The rest of the season youll love the foliage!
