Primula sieboldii ‘Shumina’ PPAF – Von Siebold's Primrose
Though little known in the US, Primula sieboldii cultivars are highly cherished in Japan where they are native. New cultivars such as ‘Shumina’ will command more than $100 per plant at their introduction. ‘Shumina’ flower petals are delicately frilled with faces of deep lilac, backed near white on 4-6” stems in May and June. Each plant produces a profusion of flowers then goes summer dormant like spring bulbs. Propagation is prohibited.

Tricyrtis ‘Purple Beauty’ – Toad Lily
We have no idea why this plant is called a toad lily. It doesn’t look like a toad and toads don’t eat it. But don’t be put off by the common name, ‘Purple Beauty’ does indeed live up to its cultivar name. Growing only 15-18” tall it is far shorter than most other members of its genus. It will colonize beautifully in your moist shade garden, giving you dozens of orchid-like florets on every stem starting in August and lasting until hard frost. It combines well with Hostas.

Sun Exposure: Full to Partial Shade
Cold Hardiness: Zones 5-9; multch to overwinter
Spacing: 15-20" apart; it will fill in quickly
Growth Rate: Moderate to fast but never invasive
Water and Soil Needs: Likes rich, humus laden soil.
Don't allow to dry out in the heat of the summer

Verbascum ‘Caribbean Crush’ PPAF – Mullein
This is a large leaved Verbascum that grows only 18-20” tall. The flowers are salmon pink and appear from early to late summer, if the spent flowers are removed. As with all Verbascum, removal of spent flowers before they set seed increases the longevity of the plant. The plant is also intolerant of wet conditions in winter, so excellent drainage of the soil is a must. Throughout its long bloom period these fat flower stalks will turn anyone’s head! Propagation is prohibited

Sun Exposure: Full Sun
Cold Hardiness: Zone 5-8
Spacing: 12-18" apart
Growth Rate: Moderate to fast growth rate
Water and Soil Needs: Porus soils produce the best
plants. Allow the soil to dry out between waterings

Viola ‘Mars’
We received this new, Japanese introduction by way of Dan Heims, co-owner of Terra Nova Nurseries in Tigard, OR. Unlike the round, bland green leaves of most violets, ‘Mars’ has triangular, spade-shaped leaves with dark purple centers, striking to look at all season long! An added bonus to the dramatic foliage, are its delicate and fragrant, lavender-pink flowers in mid-spring. “Dan Heims, you clever devil, you’ve done it again!” Try mixing ‘Mars’ into a combination planter or patio urn
