Alstroemeria 'Freedom' (PP#9393) - Peruvian Lily
From the breeding program of Dr. Mark Bridgen at the University of Connecticut, this vigorous and heavy blooming new cultivar has flowers that are a blend of rich pink to pink blush.  With as many as 20 flowers per stem, Alstroemeria ‘Freedom’ blooms from June to September, producing cut flowers that remain fresh in the vase for up to 3 weeks.  It prefers cool soil temperatures, so an application of mulch is best if it is grown in full sun.  Where it is not hardy, the tuberous roots can be dug and stored over winter like Dahlias.

Angelica pachycarpa - Archangel
A native of the “New Zealand Alps”, Angelica pachycarpa grows just 2 feet tall and has extremely glossy green foliage bearing a uniquely pleasing fragrance.  Unlike other Angelicas, it is truly perennial.  The flowers are white and the plant is most at home in semi-shaded moist areas.  Looking somewhat like an herbaceous bonsai, it never fails to attract attention as a single point of focus or bold grouping in your garden.

Sun Exposure: Full to Partial Sun
Cold Hardiness: Zone 5-9
Spacing: 24-36"
Growth Rate: Moderate
Water Needs: Prefers moist but well drained soil

Brunnera macrophylla ‘Variegata’ - Variegated Siberian Bugloss
Because this eye-riveting plant is so difficult to propagate vegetatively and impossible by seed, it has never been commonly offered in the trade.  After years of experimentation we have finally developed a protocol which enables us to clone it “in vitro”.  The large heart shaped leaves have bold white margins that really brighten up shady locations.  Clear, forget-me-not blue flowers emerge in early spring.  Although easy to grow, it is agonizingly slow-growing and consequently demand is always greater than supply.  Grab it now; you may not see it again.

Sun Exposure: Full to Partial Shade
Cold Hardiness: Zone 3-7
Spacing: 12-18"
Growth Rate: Slow
Water Needs: Prefers well drained soil

Campanula ‘Cherry Bells’ - Bellflower
One of our associates found this unusual gem while wandering the garden aisle of a Japanese supermarket.  It bore no label but sometimes a plant just exudes good breeding.  Call it “class” if you will, this plant has it.  In late spring and early summer, long red bell-like flowers adorn this mystery bellflower hybrid.  It has a strong upright habit with a spreading form, like old-fashioned “Cups and Saucers” but perennial.

Sun Exposure: Full to Partial Sun
Cold Hardiness: Zones 5-9
Spacing: 12-18"
Growth Rate: Moderate
Water Needs: Prefers well drained soil

Campanula ‘Kent Belle’ - Bellflower
From Kent in England, this garden monarch has rapidly worked its way through the devious routes of garden fanatics throughout the temperate world.  Introduced by the inimitable Elizabeth Strangman, doyen of plant breeders, ‘Kent Belle’ is a sterile cross between C. takesimana and C. punctata, bearing large, violet-blue flowers on 2 foot stems all summer long.  Your eyes will be attracted to a single plant from some distance but a grouping will arrest anyone’s attention.

Sun Exposure: Full to Partial Sun
Cold Hardiness: Zones 4-8
Spacing: 18-24"
Growth Rate: Moderate
Water Needs: Prefers well drained soil
