Heuchera ‘Petite Pearl Fairy’ (PPAF) - Coral Bells
A dwarf Heuchera that grows only 3-4 inches tall with bronze-purple foliage and pink flowers in late spring to early summer.  Its diminutive size makes it perfect for smaller gardens and partially shaded rock gardens.  This cultivar was hybridized by Charles Oliver of Scotsdale, Pennsylvania, whose brilliant hybridizing efforts seem to be living proof that good things come in small packages.

Sun Exposure: Partial Shade
Cold Hardiness: Zones 3-9
Spacing: 6"
Growth Rate: Slow
Water Needs: Moist well drained soil with a neutral pH

Heucherella ‘Viking Ship’ (PPAF) - Foamy Bells
JIntroduced by the world famous hybridizer (and legendary raconteur), Dan Heims of Portland, Oregon, this unique form of Heucherella has extremely cut leaves marked with a dark spot in spring.  Profuse pink flowers grow 24 inches tall and bloom in spring for a four to five week period; tolerates humidity but can survive drought conditions.  If your garden suffers from the amorphous shade “blahs”, perk it up with some ‘Viking Ships’.

Sun Exposure: Partial Shade
Cold Hardiness: Zone 4-7
Spacing: 12"
Growth Rate: Moderate
Water Needs: Moist, well drained soil; neutral pH

Hosta ‘Loyalist’ - Plantain Lily
Hosta ‘Patriot’ has bold white margins on its leaves.  In revolutionary times the “patriots” fought opposite the “loyalists” (“Those ‘limey’ loving low lifes!”).  Likewise, ‘Loyalist’ is the exact opposite of ‘Patriot’ having bold white interiors to its leaves.  ‘Loyalist’ is nonetheless a sport of ‘Patriot’ having all the good growing characteristics of its counterpart and being equally striking in a shade garden setting.  Try planting them in equal groups and watch them do battle.  The rockets will glare!  Will bombs burst in air?

Sun Exposure: Full to Partial Shade
Cold Hardiness: Zone 5-9
Spacing: 20-24"
Growth Rate: Moderate
Water Needs: Moist, well drained soil; neutral pH

Hosta ‘On Stage’ - Plantain Lily
One of the most beautiful and tidiest of the interior variegated hostas, ‘On Stage’ puts the old-fashioned variegated favorite to shame.  It won’t sun-scorch (assuming a modicum of water during the summer) and is almost completely sun-fast, showing no ill effects to ninety degree weather.  Nor does it have the bad habit of greening up like its out-dated precursor.  The 30 inch scapes bear light blue, trumpet-shaped flowers in summer.  Isn’t it time to upgrade your cute row of variegated Hostas?

Sun Exposure: Full to Partial Shade
Cold Hardiness: Zones 5-9
Spacing: 20-24"
Growth Rate: Moderate
Water Needs: Moist, well drained soil; neutral pH

Hosta ‘Summer Music’ - Plantain Lily
This hybrid from Klehm Nursery in Illinois is a spectacular sport of H. ‘Shade Master’ with a two tone chartreuse and bright gold edge and a wide creamy white center.  It must have bright morning sun to grow well.  The clumps grow 18 inches wide and are topped with pale lavender flowers in early summer but it grows just 12 inches tall.  Whether you intend to line your woodland path, encircle your tree or simply add verve to your shade garden, this is the right plant.

Sun Exposure: Full to Partial Shade
Cold Hardiness: Zones 3-9
Spacing: 12-18"
Growth Rate: Moderate
Water Needs: Moist, well drained soil; neutral pH

Iris ‘Dragonfly’ - Iris Species
1This totally different appearing Iris comes to us without a species name, only the cultivar name ‘Dragonfly’.  We suspect it to be an Iris tectorum hybrid because of its foliage similarity to that species but the only other nursery listing it (in England) calls it a sibirica.  Whatever it is, it’s beautiful. Its wide, deep green blades are attractive all season.  It doesn’t tend to get tatty like other irises.  It flowers a beautiful blue in late spring and seems to do as well in part shade as in full sun.  Please let us know if you can identify its species.

Sun Exposure: Full to Partial Shade
Cold Hardiness: Zones 5-9
Spacing: 15-18"
Growth Rate: Relatively Fast
Water Needs: Drought tolerant
